The Everest Region, also known as the Upper Khumbu, is Nepal’s second most popular trekking destination, renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, rich Sherpa culture, and awe-inspiring Himalayan peaks. It is home to some of the world's highest mountains, including Mt. Everest (8,848.86m), Cho Oyu (8,188m), Makalu (8,481m), Lhotse (8,516m), and Ama Dablam (6,812m), among countless other towering peaks. Every year, thousands of trekkers and mountaineers visit this legendary region to witness its stunning vistas, traverse high-altitude trails, and immerse themselves in Buddhist traditions.
Most trekking routes in the Everest Region follow the Dudh Koshi River Valley, passing through Sagarmatha National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its diverse flora, fauna, and dramatic landscapes. Trekking trails are lined with forests of rhododendron, blue pine, and fir, adding a vibrant charm, especially during spring when the rhododendrons bloom.
The region is home to diverse wildlife, including the elusive snow leopard, Himalayan tahr, musk deer, and pika (mouse hare). Birdwatchers can spot species like the snow crow, snow pigeon, and Nepal’s national bird, the Impeyan pheasant (Danfe).
The Everest Region is deeply influenced by Sherpa culture, with ancient Buddhist monasteries, colorful prayer flags, and intricately carved mani stones dotting the landscape. Trekkers can experience authentic Sherpa hospitality in traditional villages like Khumjung, Phortse, and Dingboche.
The difficulty level depends on the chosen route, but most treks in this region are classified as moderate to strenuous due to high altitude and rugged terrain.
