Nar Phu Valley Trek

A remote and less-traveled trek that takes you through the hidden valleys of Nar and Phu. The trek offers a mix of Tibetan culture, ancient monasteries, and dramatic landscapes.

Nar Phu Valley Trek

The Nar Phu Valley Trek is a remote and adventurous trekking route located in the Annapurna region of Nepal. It offers an exceptional experience, with stunning landscapes, Tibetan-influenced culture, and an opportunity to explore a less-traveled part of Nepal. The trek leads you through the isolated Nar and Phu valleys, which were newly opened to trekkers.

The trek begins at Besisahar (start of the Annapurna Circuit) and follows the trail through beautiful villages, lush forests, and dramatic landscapes. From Koto, the trek diverges to enter the Nar Phu Valley, which is off the beaten path. You'll pass through traditional Tibetan villages and cross high passes, ending your journey at Kang La Pass.

Trek Highlights

  • Nar Phu Valley: A hidden gem in Nepal, the Nar Phu Valley is known for its isolation, rugged terrain, and traditional Tibetan culture. The villages here have been untouched by mass tourism and offer a unique cultural experience.
  • Phu Village: The village is one of the most pristine and ancient Tibetan settlements, with a rich cultural heritage. The Tashi Lhakhang Monastery in Phu is a major attraction.
  • Nar Village: The village is another Tibetan-influenced settlement with impressive views of Annapurna II, Manaslu, and other peaks.
  • Kang La Pass: The high-altitude pass (5,300m) offers panoramic views of the surrounding peaks, including Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, and Manaslu.
  • Beautiful Landscapes: The trek takes you through forests, gorges, valleys, and alpine meadows, with views of towering peaks and snow-capped mountains throughout the journey.

Trekking Information

  • Difficulty Level: The Nar Phu Valley Trek is challenging due to its remote nature, high altitudes, and steep terrain. Proper acclimatization is essential to prevent altitude sickness. This trek requires a good level of fitness and preparation.
  • Accommodation: Most of the accommodation along the trek is in teahouses or basic guesthouses. In the higher villages, the accommodation can be quite basic, but comfortable enough for trekking.
  • Food: In the teahouses, you will find simple meals like Dal Bhat (lentil soup with rice), momo (dumplings), noodles, and other Tibetan-influenced foods. At higher altitudes, the food choices become more limited.

Trekking Permits

  • Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP): Required for trekking in the Annapurna region.
  • Restricted Area Permit (RAP): Since the Nar Phu Valley is a restricted area, you’ll need a special Nar Phu Valley permit, which is obtained through a licensed trekking agency. The permit is typically issued for a group of trekkers, and you must be accompanied by a guide.
  • Trekkers’ Information Management System (TIMS) Card: A TIMS card is also required for trekkers in Nepal.

Trekking Safety & Health Tips

  • Altitude Sickness: As you will be trekking at high altitudes, it’s important to acclimatize properly. Take rest days, stay hydrated, and don’t push yourself too hard. If you experience symptoms of altitude sickness, descend immediately.
  • Weather: The weather in the Nar Phu Valley can change rapidly. Expect cold nights, especially at higher altitudes. Bring warm clothes, rain gear, and layers to stay comfortable.
  • Physical Preparation: The trek is physically demanding, with long days of walking on steep terrain. Training for endurance, strength, and high-altitude hiking will help you tackle the challenges of the trek.

Additional Information

  • Remote and Peaceful Trek: Nar Phu Valley is a much less crowded and peaceful trekking route compared to the main Annapurna Circuit, offering a more serene experience with fewer trekkers.
  • Cultural Experience: You will have the opportunity to immerse yourself in the local Tibetan culture and interact with the villagers who still follow traditional lifestyles.
  • Buffer Day: It’s a good idea to plan an extra day in case of unexpected delays due to weather or other factors.
