Bungamati and Khokana are classical medieval villages, rich in Newari art and sculpture. The Patan City Day Tour explores these villages, showcasing masterpieces carved in stone, metal, and wood.
Embark on a journey through history, culture, and artistry with a visit to Patan, Bungamati, and Khokana-three remarkable destinations in the Kathmandu Valley. These places, rich in Newari heritage, offer an immersive experience of traditional art, architecture, and local life.
Also known as ‘Yala’ in the Newari language, Patan is a city of exquisite craftsmanship, boasting intricately carved sculptures in stone, metal, and wood. It is home to approximately 600 stupas and 185 Bahals (monastic courtyards), each telling a story of its golden era-the Malla period.
At the heart of Patan lies the Patan Durbar Square, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which showcases magnificent temples, monuments, and palaces built during the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries. The four stupas at the city's corners, attributed to Emperor Ashoka's pilgrimage to Nepal in 250 BC, further enhance its historical significance.
Situated across the Bagmati River from Chobar, Bungamati is a traditional Newari village that has preserved its medieval charm. The village is centered around the grand Rato Machhindranath Temple, dedicated to the deity worshipped as the patron of Patan. It is believed that Rato Machhindranath resides here for six months of the year before moving to Patan.
Exploring Bungamati’s pedestrian-only streets is a delightful experience, where visitors can observe local artisans practicing the age-old craft of woodcarving. The village is also home to the Bungamati Culture Museum, the serene Dey Pukha (central pond), and the Karya Binayak Temple, a sacred site dedicated to Lord Ganesha.
A short distance from Bungamati, Khokana is another charming Newari settlement, renowned for its agricultural traditions and vibrant community life. The village suffered extensive damage in the 1934 earthquake, yet it remains a captivating destination. At its heart stands the Shree Rudrayani Devi (Shekala Mai) Temple, a striking triple-tiered structure.
As you wander through Khokana, you will witness villagers engaged in various traditional activities such as hay mat weaving, cotton stuffing, straw baling, tailoring, wool spinning, and rice winnowing—offering an authentic glimpse into rural Newari life.
